Dear Walden Elementary School Community,
We are thrilled to introduce our PBIS program for the 2024-2025 school year! PBIS, which stands for Positive Behavior Intervention and Support, is designed to foster a safe and productive learning environment for all students and staff in all settings. This approach allows teachers to teach effectively and ensures that all students can learn in a positive atmosphere.
At WES, our PBIS program is centered around student motivation. Students earn Viking Bucks for demonstrating safe, kind, respectful, or responsible behavior. Staff always aim to tell the students WHY they earned Viking Bucks to reinforce positive behaviors, leading to those behaviors becoming automatic. Students are invited twice a month to spend their Viking Bucks at the School Store to choose a tangible reward for their positive behavior.
At our school store, prizes vary from $5 to $400 Viking Bucks to teach students that their good behavior is recognized and that they can save or delay their gratification to earn those larger prizes.
The school store began in the 2023-2024 school year. In its first year, behavioral referrals to the office decreased by 25%. We look forward to another reduction in negative behaviors by continuing to recognize when every student does something positive.
Parents and families are our top support in our mission to recognize when our students do amazing things. Here are some things that you can do at home to support the PBIS program at WES:
Ask your child if they received Viking Bucks and WHY they earned them at the end of every school day
Ask your child what they are hoping to buy at the school store and foster saving for those larger prizes
Recognize and praise your child at home when they are being Respectful, Responsible, Safe, and Kind
Ensure your child is on time daily so that they have time to get to the school store when it is their turn.
