Kyle Cavanaugh, Valley Central Graduate Class of 1976, was inducted into the VC Athletic Hall of Fame at the Valley Central Boys Basketball game on January 6th, 2023.
In his teenage years, his family relocated from Brooklyn and Kyle transferred to Valley Central as a competitive swimmer with his sights set on earning a swimming scholarship. The only problem was that in 1976 Valley Central did not have a pool. Instead, Kyle opted to play football and basketball. His skills on the court and his grades in the classroom earned him a basketball scholarship. He received a bachelor’s degree from Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn., where he earned a basketball scholarship.
Kyle returned to Valley Central teaching special education and coaching modified soccer and basketball for a brief period of time, before pursuing a career in higher education. He holds an M.B.A. from Belmont University and master’s degrees from Vanderbilt and the University of Illinois, Chicago.
Kyle Cavanaugh has held administrative positions at the University of Texas, Rice University, Vanderbilt University, the University of Florida, and Duke University before being named as NBA President, Administration in March 2022.
As NBA President, Administration Cavanaugh oversees the global facilities, information technology, security, risk management, people and inclusion, and administrative affairs of the league and its related entities.
The VC Athletic Hall of Fame voted unanimously to induct Kyle into the Valley Central Athletic Hall of Fame on December 16, 2022. Our varsity basketball team was able to make the announcement at their game presenting Cavanaugh with the plaque and award recognizing his achievement. The official induction ceremony for the Athletic Hall of Fame will be held in the Fall of 2023.
