The Board of Education recognizes the importance and benefit of publicly recognizing outstanding performance, leadership and contributions of people associated with our school district. This recognition may take many forms, including a Board resolution or proclamation, a memorial scholarship, a dedication of a facility or a part of a facility to an individual or individuals, and other forms of recognition deemed suitable by the Board.
Memorial Gifts
Occasionally, individuals may wish to donate gifts to a school or the District in memory of another individual or a family member. As usual, when such gifts are offered, they must be accepted by the Board of Education. When the name of an individual or family is to appear on the gift or in a memorial plaque designating the gift, the Board should be so informed at the time that the gift is offered to the Board of Education for acceptance. Exhibit 7500-E need not be completed in these instances.
Dedicating a Facility or Part of a Facility
The dedication or naming of a building or facility for a person is an extraordinary and rare event which requires the Board to consider the lifetime achievements of the individual for this permanent recognition. The Board should not consider such dedications lightly nor base them on recent notable events. Time both as an arbiter of character and a measure of esteem should be factored into a decision about a building or facility dedication.
Such recognition should identify a person or persons who have attained substantial national or local prominence or who have provided significant benefit to the district, either in the course of his/her employment or volunteer efforts on behalf of the district.
Any resident and/or employee of the district may nominate a person or persons for recognition by submitting a written proposal to the District Clerk. The proposal must be accompanied by a Dedication Request which includes a clear justification for the recognition (see Exhibit 7500-E), a specific description of the recognition proposed, and exact wording of any inscriptions and the materials to be used to fabricate the recognition.
Further, the Board requires that the person or persons requesting the recognition for another assemble a committee which represents all employee groups who work in the building or facility and a community member to prepare written responses to the Dedication Criteria outlined in Exhibit 7500-E, attached.
The Board may, by majority vote, approve any of the above forms of recognition to be displayed or placed on, or in, or affixed to, district property. The recognition may be purchased with district funds authorized by the Board (to the extent authorized by law), or through funds received by the district from student, community or parent groups or individuals The Board reserves the right to approve the materials, design and wording of all forms of recognition.
