Odyssey of the Mind
Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. Participating on an Odyssey of the Mind team is a challenging and rewarding experience. The team consists of seven students. Students and students alone are responsible for solving a Long Term Problem. Coaches, parents and other adults are NOT allowed to assist in solving the overall problem in any fashion. Students prepare for months in anticipation of competing in a regional competition that takes place each March at Orange Ulster BOCES in Goshen, NY. If successful in the eyes of the judges, the team can then move on to compete at the state and possibly the national level.
Student Council
The purpose of the Montgomery Elementary Student Council is to teach and involve students in the democratic process by putting classroom learning into practice through elections of students into various positions in the Student Council Club. Student Council also fosters communication between students, parents, and teachers, and provides an opportunity for students to engage in public service through school-wide and community activities.
STEAM Enrichment Club
While participating in the STEAM Enrichment Club, 4th and 5th grade students have the opportunity to learn concepts that will prepare them for 21st century careers. Using Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math as tools to foster student learning, the Club focuses on expanding and sharpening students’ knowledge in algebra, numbers and operations, geometry, measurement, critical thinking, problem solving, design, and many more areas through fun activities and projects. STEAM Enrichment Club rotates to each elementary school throughout the year and is available for a limited time at each school.
Writing Club
The MES Writing Club is comprised of 5th grade students. The fifth graders write articles for the MES News for NOW newspaper about topics that interest students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. Examples of these articles are: interviews of specific staff members, happenings around the school, book and movie reviews, and a kid’s corner, which usually includes an entertaining puzzle for kids. Weekly meetings include brainstorming what they want to write about, researching information to include in their articles, writing first drafts of the articles, and finally writing final copies. The Writing Club usually publishes a new issue every 4-6 weeks.
