Welcome to Valley Central

Valley Central was established on July 1, 1958, as the Town of Montgomery Central School District as Montgomery, Maybrook, and Walden School Districts were merged into one by community vote. It was renamed Valley Central in 1959, the name chosen by the junior and senior high students, who also decided to become the Vikings. The district’s official seal was conceived by the VCHS Student Government Association in 1964. Learn more about our history here.

Valley Central is a school district of almost 4190 students and approximately 1,000 full and part-time staff situated mainly in the Town of Montgomery, New York with its three villages of Maybrook, Montgomery and Walden. Students also come from the adjacent areas of the towns of Newburgh, Crawford, Wallkill, Hamptonburgh, and New Windsor. Four elementary schools, an alternative learning center, one middle school, and one high school make up the district. 

A seven-member Board of Education provides governance with meetings scheduled approximately twice per month. Over the last decade, voters have approved the majority of proposed budgets and supported bond votes. Although considered a medium-to-large district in the four-county region, Valley Central manages to maintain among the lowest tax rates and per-pupil expenditures in the Mid-Hudson.

Our outstanding teaching, administrative, and support staff are provided ongoing professional development. Valley Central routinely outperforms similar schools and districts in state assessments of student achievement. The district is a cornerstone of our community and has strong support for its students.

Section 504

Students not identified under IDEA may be considered to be disabled under Section 504, if they meet the definition of a “qualified handicapped person,” which is a person who has or has had a physical or mental impairment which substantially limits major life activity, or is regarded as handicapped by others.
