Third-grade Walden Elementary School student Valerie Nielson won the Teaching the Hudson Valley writing contest, “writing about place”, in the fall. The prize was an all-expenses-paid field trip for her entire class to the place that she wrote about, which was the Hudson River.
On a bright sunny day, the class claimed their prize and headed off to Washington’s Headquarters in Newburgh, New York, where they were treated to a tour of the historic site and a lesson on the Hudson River School of Artists from an instructor from the Wallkill River Art School.
Each student set up an easel, and painted the magnificent view of the river before them. Afterwards, the students critiqued each others’ work, sharing what they liked best about each painting. FEAST caterers supplied berets for the students, adding a savoir faire to the scene.
